Spectroscopy Testing Highlights Purity Differences in Hypochlorous Manufacturing

Some competitors claim that their products are free from hypochlorite, claiming to be ‘pure hypochlorous.’ To verify these assertions, in April 2024 we submitted a bottle of Clinisept+Skin and a new bottle from the competitor in question, for independent analysis. We entrusted both samples to the reputable Oxford Materials Characterisation Service for thorough spectroscopy evaluation.

Spectroscopy analysis examines the molecular content of a liquid to identify its constituent components. For the testing of hypochlorous products, the process looks for the hypochlorous molecule and the hypochlorite ion, some of which is always produced as a by-product during the manufacture of hypochlorous. Here we should note, it is almost impossible to produce hypochlorous without the production of some hypochlorite, however this needs to be kept to a minimum, as hypochlorite is not at all skin compatible. 

These two independent spectroscopy tests, undertaken by the same scientist in the same lab, showed the Clinisept+ bottle to contain 90% hypochlorous, whilst the competitor sample was found to contain only 37% hypochlorous.

As can be seen there is a significant difference between the quality of the two products, with the competitor product claiming to be ‘pure hypochlorous’ actually containing more hypochlorite than hypochlorous. Despite competitor products claiming many of Clinisept+’s characteristics, none of the competitor products are made the same way as Clinisept+ and therefore do not deliver the same patient safety and assurance as Clinisept+. Why is Clinisept+ such a tremendous step forwards?

Naturally occurring in the body, hypochlorous acid (HOCl) plays a crucial role in the immune system’s response to infection [1]. White blood cells, particularly neutrophils, produce hypochlorous acid as part of their defence mechanism against invading pathogens like bacteria and viruses [2]. 

It is a tremendously powerful cleansing agent, making it the ideal solution for aesthetic skin prep and treatment aftercare for procedures such as injectables, fillers, peels, microneedling, and more!

The Challenge of Producing Hypochlorous Commercially

However, producing hypochlorous commercially is not an easy process: in its natural form, hypochlorous has a very short shelf life. Once manufactured, it can decay rapidly and can lose much of its efficacy in a matter of days. As a result, and, as has already been proven, not all hypochlorous products actually contain that much hypochlorous. Clinisept+ Skin stands out with a proven 2-year shelf life and a very high hypochlorous content.

The Methods of Manufacturing Hypochlorous Acid

The key to producing a safe and effective hypochlorous lies in the proportion of hypochlorous vs hypochlorite in the solution.

Electrolysis has traditionally been the most common method of manufacturing hypochlorous [3]. However, this manufacturing method does not yield the best efficacy or safety and different batches of hypochlorous chemistries made in this way are often found to be inconsistent. Electrolysis often produces high levels of sodium hypochlorite, commonly known as bleach, as a by-product. Sodium hypochlorite is not skin compatible and lacks the antimicrobial efficacy of hypochlorous. It is corrosive and may irritate the skin or cause burning pain, inflammation, and blisters [4].

Clinisept+ products are different. They are manufactured using a unique proprietary chemical process that does not involve electrolysis. This process generates a hypochlorous solution of consistently high purity and stability, containing only a fraction of the sodium hypochlorite by-product compared to its competitors.
